My mother had seen a petit basset griffon vendeen while out for a walk and fell in love with it. We got to know the breed and through twists and turns we ended up with a larger version of the breed, the grand basset griffon vendeen.

 

On Christmas 2004, we received the best and most surprising gift of our lives. The small envelope may not have seemed like a very nice gift at first, but the content brought squeals of joy. The envelope contained a printed email in which dad had reserved a puppy for us from the next grand litter. This began the impatient wait, and on April 23rd, while we were on a trip to the cottage, we received a lovely message saying, “you have a puppy.” On that same day, mom’s friend came up with a name, Lulu.

Lulu was a forgiving and easy first dog. Sure, she had the challenging traits typical of grands, but above all, she was calm, kind, and charmingly silly.

 

With Lulu, I immersed myself deeply in the world of dogs, starting in my teens. We got to know many different hobbies and made new friends. Without Lulu, I would definitely not be the person I am today. I would not have experienced the excitement of dog shows, long car adventures (I probably wouldn't even have a driver's license) or friendships, without which life would be much poorer now.

 

But perhaps most importantly: I wouldn't have been able to live this ordinary, yet so unique everyday life with dogs. And especially with this very special breed. And at the same time, this breed took my heart.

 

"Only one can be the first." I couldn't have asked for a better first dog than Lulu. Lulu is still a part of everything I do with dogs – every moment carries her original spark.
