Pepsi, a once in a lifetime dog. Pepsi arrived to us from Sweden in the spring of 2021. We had previously had two grands from Finland, but even though the breed stayed the same, I wanted something new. I had admired Zelina’s beautiful dogs on Facebook for several years, so I decided to go for an import. I contacted Zelina a year earlier, and to my delight, she was happy to sell me a puppy. And what a puppy he turned out to be!

Pepsi is open and curious by nature. He seems to enjoy attention, and wherever we go, there’s usually some kind of Pepsi show going on. He’s an easy dog and generally quite calm – though he can get excited quickly when things get fun enough.

Pepsi and I are actively involved in shows and nosework. We have also become passionate about blood tracking. Over the years, we have achieved great results in shows both in Finland and abroad and

Pepsi has also been on the Finnish Kennel Club's Show Dog of the Year list every year he has been shown. In Nosework, we have participated in a few trials and managed to get one full 100 point result.

We have also participated in one blood tracking trial together, where Pepsi chose game over the track.

As a hobby dog, Pepsi challenges his owner. He really likes to work together, but in many cases he tries to do somehting his own way or gets bored and frustrated. In blood tracking, he may stop to eat grass, in Nosework he makes false indications and in the show ring he is not always enthusiastic enough to run in small rings, but in large group rings he usually gets excited. Despite everything, it is fun to do stuff with Pepsi, even though I have to constantly think of different tricks and solutions to make things run smoothly! He for sure enjoys doing stuff together.

Pepsi's SmartDog test 20.12.2024

At the beginning of the test, Pepsi responded kindly to human-initiated contact and explored the new environment calmly and actively. Pepsi was highly motivated throughout the test. At times, the dog’s focus on tasks wavered slightly, which may have been due to excitement, occasionally expressed by humping the tester.

In the cylinder test, Pepsi behaved impulsively. Pepsi read human gestures very well, though he could also be misled by them (in the deception section). Problem-solving related to the space, such as the V-shaped barrier, was easy for Pepsi, and the dog also successfully solved the logical reasoning task, which is the most challenging part of the test. In the impossible task, Pepsi acted as a completely independent problem solver and did not seek any help to complete the task. Pepsi remembered two out of four repetitions in the memory task correctly, which is an average performance. In the social learning task, Pepsi did not manipulate the correct button.

Pepsi’s strengths in the test included openness, curiosity about the environment, problem-solving skills, the ability to read gestures, an independent problem-solving strategy, and logical reasoning abilities. Training challenges may arise from impulsivity and excitement combined with strong independence. However, these traits may be typical hound characteristics, which are naturally not flaws in a hound.
